General course organization and Methodology
The main purpose of this course is to integrate theoretical knowledge of English with the practical skills of listening and speaking. It is mainly oriented to the workplace but time is also dedicated to language that is more typical of day-to-day social interaction. The specific aims are as follows:

 

- To provide models of useful language for different professional situations related with the PR and advertising sectors (job interviews and presentations) and opportunities to practise talking about a range of different topics in social situations;
- To improve the ability to understand spoken English;
- To practice different language functions such as expressing and asking for ideas and opinions, agreeing and disagreeing, etc.;
- To develop communication strategies;
- To improve grammatical accuracy, fluency, vocabulary and pronunciation;
- To be able to talk about current affairs and the news;
- To increase awareness of the cultural factors associated with the need to communicate effectively with professionals from all over the world
- To encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning, both inside and outside the classroom;
- To promote the ability to work independently as well as in groups.

 

The course focuses on:
i) job interviews, work and the workplace
ii) presentations
iii) creating and recording an advertisement for radio.

 

Each part contains specific activities directly related to the main theme, as well as more general activities. Preparing for job interviews and giving presentations assist with fluency and communication strategies, while creating a radio advertisement focuses more on pronunciation, intonation and grammatical accuracy. An active methodology is used to encourage maximum participation in class.

 

Students are recommended to attend classes. Single assessment is not recommended for students whose English level is not at least C1.


Course Topics
Block 1 English for the Workplace: job interviews
Introduction to English for the workplace.

Hours 1 and 2. What can you offer an employer? Your personal qualities and skills. Job interviews and how to prepare for them.
Talking about organisations and their activities; talking about your job, etc.
Creating a radio advertisement: writing, performing and recording an advert for radio.

Block 2 Presentations

Hours 1 and 2. Introduction to presentations: "do's and don'ts" for effective presentations.
Basic techniques: the start; developing and structuring your presentation using signposting; the finish.
Powerful techniques to connect with your audience: repetition, anecdotes, the rule of three, etc.
Questions from the audience and how to deal with them.

Course-specific assessment system information
  • Check the end of assessment period and academic management calendar.
  • Plagiarism and/or the copying of assessed activities will result in the assessed work in question receiving a 'fail' mark and may lead to the student/s concerned failing the course. The School may also decide to take disciplinary measures. Anti-plagiarism programmes will be used and if this infraction is detected in the 20% or more of the material the final grade will be zero.
  • Marks will be given for correct grammar and spelling, style and appropriacy of message. 
  • Work handed in late or in formats other than stated for assessment purposes will not be accepted, nor will any alternative work be accepted to pass the course.
  • Class attendance is recommended in all cases, also for students who have opted for the single assessment system. Check cases in which it is mandatory.
  • All learning activities are graded from 0-10.
  • The minimum grade required to pass each learning activity is 5.
  • To receive the grade of "Matricula d'honor", the student must achieve an overall grade of 10, and, according to the regulations, the number of Honours Grades can not exceed 5% of the total number of students registered in the subject.

Exam Only Assessment System
Requirements: students wishing to be assessed under the exam only system must submit a formal application within the time frame and in the format set out in the academic calendar.

1.- A monologue describing the personal qualities needed to work in PR or advertising and why you think you would be a good professional in one of these sectors (3 minutes).

2.- A radio advertisement (1 minute).

3.- A presentation on a topic related to PR or advertising (5 minutes).

2 Exam The final exam will be a discussion with the lecturer about some aspect(s) of the course.

All marks given will be individual.
40%
This option is recommended exclusively for students whose English level is equal to or higher than C1 (advanced).
