General course organization and Methodology

L’objectiu principal de l’assignatura és la integració dels coneixements teòrics amb les competències pràctiques de la comprensió auditiva de la llengua i de la seva producció oral. S’orienta al món professional però també es dedica temps a coneixements i capacitats més propis de l’interacció quotidiana i social. És pretén el següent:

- Proporcionar models del llenguatge adequats per a les diferents situacions professionals relacionades amb els sectors de la publicitat i les RRPP (principalment les reunions de negocis i les presentacions) i oportunitats per a practicar tipus diferents d’interacció i conversar sobre temes tant professionals com quotidians (Social English).

- Millorar la capacitat d’entendre la llengua parlada.
- Promoure les habilitats dels estudiants de utilitzar efectivament les funcions lingüístiques: expressar i demanar idees, opinions i desitjos; negociar, resoldre problemes, etc.
- Desenvolupar estratègies de comunicació verbal.
- Millorar la precisió gramatical, la fluïdesa d’expressió i la pronunciació.
- Parlar de temes de l’actualitat i les notícies (l’hora 2 de cada sessió).
- Conscienciar els estudiants dels factors culturals rellevants associats amb la necessitat de comunicar-se efectivament amb professionals de tot el món, amb especial èmfasi en el model angloamericà d’interacció.
- Fomentar la màxima implicació dels estudiants en el seu procés d’aprenentatge.
- Fomentar tant l’autonomia com la capacitat de treballar en equip.

Per tant d'assolir aquests objectius, l’assignatura s’impartirà en 2 blocs en els quals es treballarà principalment però no exclusivament:

i) les reunions de negocis.

ii) les presentacions.

A cada bloc hi hauran activitats específiques directament relacionades amb el tema tractat, més activitats més generals (l’hora 2). Es pretén utilitzar una metodologia activa que fomenti la participació per part dels estudiants en totes les activitats formatives. És recomanable assistir a classe, i la participació constructiva es valorarà.

Block 1 L'English for business i les reunions de negocis

El factor cultural: l’importància de cultural awareness en el tracte professional i personal 
Introducció a l'English for business: parlar de l’organització i les seves activitats, el personal, parlar de la teva feina, etc.
Les reunions de negocis: obrir i tancar la reunió - expressar la teva opinió; negociar; expressar acord i desacord amb altres opinions; interrompre amb educació.
La importància del turn-taking en l’ interacció professional i social.
El "social English" i expressions freqüents.
El "networking".
Els números en anglès.

L'hora 2: la publicitat i els RRPP i la societat; temes de la vida quotidiana.

Block 2 Les presentacions

Introducció a les presentacions: "Do's and don'ts" per a presentacions efectives.
Tècniques bàsiques: els començament; el desenvolupament: com estructurar les idees: el signposting; el final.
Tècniques potents de comunicació per a connectar amb l’audiència: la repetició, els anècdotes, el rule of three, els mantras, etc.
Les preguntes de l’audiència i estratègies efectives per a contestar-les.
L'hora 2: la publicitat i els RRPP i la societat; temes de la vida quotidiana.

Course-specific assessment system information
  • All learning activities are graded from 0-10.
  • The minimum grade required to pass each learning activity is 5.
  • Check the end of assessment period and academic management calendar.
  • Class attendance is recommended in all cases. Also for those students who have opted for Exam Only Assessment System. Check cases in which is mandatory.
  • Deliveries will not be accepted later or in formats or different supports than stated for assessment purposes. Neither it will be accepted any alternative recovery work.

Requirements: unless they indicate to the contrary, all students will be assessed under this system.

Video activity 1. Roleplay of a business meeting, related to a professional topic, filmed and handed in on a USB or CD. (20% of final mark).

Video activity 2. A group presentation related to a professional topic, filmed and handed in on a USB or CD. (20% of final mark).

Although students are given individual marks, there will be a group element for questions of organisation, effort and relevance of topic for both activities.

Exam Only Assessment System
